Extension in Des Moines County offers programs that support families, horticulture, 4-H youth development, business and industry, communities, agriculture and continuing education. Iowa State University Extension builds partnerships and provides research-based learning opportunities to improve the quality of life in Iowa.

We want to promote volunteerism in Des Moines County through our Volunteer NOW! Program. Volunteers can find local non-profits in need of volunteers and pledge their hours. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development Staff announce statewide trainings for all new 4-H Club Leaders. This training is targeted to those who are beginning as volunteers or those with three years or less experience.

Local county offices of ISU Extension and Outreach sponsor food safety certification courses for food service managers and employees. Upcoming sessions at Great Prairie AEA in Burlington are Thursday, October 15 and Wednesday, December 16, 2015. Each class runs from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm with the exam to follow.

Acorns are falling from oak trees into yards everywhere. Viable acorns can be grown into oak trees, if properly handled.
