Extension in Des Moines County offers programs that support families, horticulture, 4-H youth development, business and industry, communities, agriculture and continuing education. Iowa State University Extension builds partnerships and provides research-based learning opportunities to improve the quality of life in Iowa.

We want to promote volunteerism in Des Moines County through our Volunteer NOW! Program. Volunteers can find local non-profits in need of volunteers and pledge their hours. This semester, Mediapolis 8th grade students have been tossing flamingos, constructing towers while blindfolded, and practicing meditation. These activities are all part of Ricochet, a 6-week middle school leadership initiative created and sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Iowa 4-H.

In the past couple of weeks a lot of corn and soybeans went into storage with temperatures in the 60s. With grain this warm, moisture migration within the grain mass and spoilage can occur very quickly, even with fairly dry grain. Ag Engineering Field Specialist Greg Brenneman explains when and how to cool the grain to prevent this.
