ISU Extension & Outreach - Des Moines County

Extension in Des Moines County offers programs that support families, horticulture, 4-H youth development, business and industry, communities, agriculture and continuing education. Iowa State University Extension builds partnerships and provides research-based learning opportunities to improve the quality of life in Iowa.



We want to promote volunteerism in Des Moines County through our Volunteer NOW! Program. Volunteers can find local non-profits in need of volunteers and pledge their hours. Providing excess garden produce to area food pantries prevents food waste while providing fresh, nutritious food to families experiencing food insecurity. Share the Harvest is a guide to make donating produce or volunteering time easier for local gardeners in Southeast Iowa.

September 21, 2016

The Des Moines County 4-H Community Dinner and Live Auction will be held as a fundraiser to support the Des Moines County 4-H Program.  Please join us Saturday evening, November 5th, 2016 with the dinner served at 5:30 pm.  The dinner will be held at the Mediapolis Elementary Gym, 725 N. Northfield Street in Mediapolis, Iowa.

August 11, 2016

Local county offices of ISU Extension and Outreach sponsor food safety certification courses for food service managers and employees.  The training will be held at Great Prairie AEA in Burlington on Thursday, September 22nd, and Tuesday, November 1st. Each class runs from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm with the exam to follow.

ISU Extension and Outreach is partnering with University of Illinois Extension and University of Missouri Extension to bring the Nonprofit Management Academy to the tri-state area! You are invited to participate in one or all of the 12 sessions. CEU's are available, as well as the opportunity to earn a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Iowa State University.

Des Moines County 4-H is excited and proud to announce the establishment of a county endowment fund with the Iowa 4-H Foundation.  There are over 75 county endowment funds established with the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

The partnership of Des Moines County and Iowa 4-H foundation provides benefits to local supporters and the local 4-H program.  The county endowment fund replaces the formally known Friends of 4-H.  There are several ways to give towards the Des Moines County Endowment. Follow the link to get more information.
