Iowa State University Extension supports a number of youth programs in Delaware County, including the 4-H program. Each year, ISU Extension in Delaware County administers a limited number of scholarships to honor outstanding 4-H members who are graduating from high school.  These scholarships are awarded through a competitive process based on the student’s record of 4-H activities, scholastic record and participation, goals and future plans, and character.

Scholarship application packets will be mailed directly to Seniors in March.

Requirements include:

James R. Shover Memorial 4-H Scholarship

($100)

The James R. Shover Memorial 4-H Scholarship was endowed through the generosity of the family and friends of the late James R. Shover. James Shover was a farmer in Delaware County who gave countless hours of volunteer time to many community activities, especially programs for the benefit of young people.  He was a long-time 4-H leader, served as a member of the Delaware County fair board, and devoted a lot of time and energy to working with youth at the county fair and throughout the year.

George Shearer Family 4-H Scholarship

($100)

The George Shearer Family 4-H Scholarship is made possible each year by the generosity of George Shearer of Delhi, who has a strong interest in education and who has been a very active supporter of the 4-H program for many years.  This $100 scholarship is given to a Delaware County

4-H’er on the basis of academic achievement,

4-H activities, community involvement, and financial need.

Harold Childs Memorial 4-H Scholarship

The Harold Childs Memorial 4-H Scholarship was endowed through the generosity of the family and friends of the late Harold Childs.  Harold Childs farmed all of his life in rural Manchester.  His children were active 4-H members, and his wife Gladys continues to be one of our most dedicated 4-H supporters.  In 2003, Gladys Childs was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. 

Allen and Ruth Remling 4-H Scholarship

($100)

The Allen and Ruth Remling 4-H Scholarship is given through the generosity of Allen and Ruth Remling of Dundee, who have been very strong supporters of Extension youth and 4-H programs, and have volunteered their time to help make those programs a success. 

Robert E. Hall Memorial 4-H Scholarship

($250)

For many people in Delaware County, the name Bob Hall is synonymous with Iowa State University Extension.  Robert E. Hall served as Delaware County Extension Director for 30 years, from 1948 until 1977.  He devoted himself to serving the families, farms, and youth of our area, and his impact on the development of Delaware County can still be seen today.  Through his work in the 4-H program, Bob influenced the lives of several generations of Delaware County young people.  In his memory, his family created the Robert E. Hall Memorial 4-H Scholarship, presented each year to an outstanding Delaware County 4-H member.

Friends of 4-H Foodstand Committee Scholarship ($100)

The Delaware County 4-H Program is very fortunate to have the support of a group of dedicated volunteers who operate the Friends of 4-H Foodstand at the fair every year.  They not only help feed the 4-H families and volunteers as well as the rest of the fairgoers—they also raise a significant amount of funds for the county 4-H program.  Most of their contributions are used to defray the costs of 4-H members who participate in out-of-county trips, camps, conferences, and other events, as well as pay a portion of all members’ state participation fees.  Their support has made 4-H activities affordable for all, regardless of income.  Beginning in 2004, they also offer the Friends of 4-H Foodstand Committee Scholarship to be given to an outstanding Delaware County 4-H’er.
