THE PLOT…

Delaware County Master Gardener
Is a column focused on the Delaware County Master Gardeners’ service activities, educational opportunities and information sharing.
Amazing how a month changes the landscape in rural Iowa…the harvest is almost complete, the fields are being prepared for next season and the frost has definitely settled on the pumpkin!!
The Master Gardeners also celebrated the end of the growing season with their annual Fall Banquet held October 16th at Cedar Lodge. A photo of the “entertainment” accompanies this article. Members of the group were “recruited” to share their knowledge of Indian plant lore with those in attendance – it was amazing the healing powers that locally grown plants have!! Thank you to Lorimer and Judy Olson who organized the evening.
Additionally two “Fold & Feed” sessions have been held by the group to prepare ornaments for the Manchester Library’s Christmas tree. Hannah Childs shared her Origami talents with everyone (photo) and as a result, numerous ornaments have been created from simple squares of paper. Be sure to visit the library’s tree in December to see the creative talents of the group!
If you are interested in becoming one of the 8,000+ Master Gardeners in the state of Iowa be sure to call the ISU Extension Office 563-927-4201 and leave your name and number – classes begin in January 2008. In the past, training has involved a three hour per night commitment, one to two nights a week for approximately six weeks and a Saturday field day at Iowa State. We’d love to have you join us!
And remember…
The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway-
Thanksgiving comes again!
