Summer Day Camps in Delaware County

Day camps offer the chance for hands-on experiments, activities, games, adventures, and most of all - FUN!  Any youth completing grades K - 6 are welcome to participate. Some camps fill up fast; sign up today!

June 21 Entry Deadline for County Fair Kiddie Shows
June 14, 2013

Anyone wishing to enter the 2013 Delaware County Fair Kiddie Lamb Show and Dairy Kiddie Show must file an entry form in the Delaware County Extension Office by Friday, June 21.  Both Kiddie events provide young people with an opportunity to participate in county fair activities and gain experience in showing livestock.

Intermediate Dairy Quiz Bowl Team Goes Undefeated, Placing 1st at 2013 State Contest

Five Dairy Quiz Bowl Teams represented Delaware County well again this year at the State Contest, held at the Starmont High School, Arlington.  One of the Intermediate Teams brought home the traveling Champion plaque for the fourth year in a row.  Members of the top Intermediate team are Nick Bagge, Katelyn Goldsmith, Kaleb Kruse and Amanda Engelken.  Other Dairy Quiz Bowl team members competing included  Cassie Burkle, Tara Goedken, Amber Engelken, Lauren Goldsmith, Sarah Goedken, Carter Kruse, Cole Kruse, Tehya Demmer Mindy Burkle, Nicole Engelken, Matt Hense, Ryan Goedken, Matthew Lansing, James Goldsmith, Jennifer Kunde (coach), and Brian Bagge (coach).

Rental rates for Iowa farmland have been pushed significantly higher by the favorable corn and soybean prices that farmers have enjoyed since 2010. This trend continued in 2013, but the rate of increase slowed considerably.  Delaware County farmland rental rate averaged $310 per acre, an increase of $25 per acre or 8% from last year.

After an extended dry period in Iowa, recent rains remind us this is a good time for beef and dairy farmers with open lots and cow yards to evaluate if runoff from their cattle yards affects waters below the yard.
