January 12, 2015

Delaware County will host three sessions of the Private Pesticide Applicator course.  The sessions will be on  January 12th, at the Maquoketa Valley High School Auditorium, Delhi at 7:00 p.m., February 26th at the Fairgrounds Community Center, Manchester at 9:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m.  The fee for this course is $20.  It is not necessary to pre-register.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach of Delaware County invites the community of Delaware county to an Open House on January 15th, from 4-7 p.m.. at the Deal ware County Extension Office at 1417 N. Franklin St., Manchester.  This will be an opportunity for you to meet our new staff, Amber Luckstead, County Extension Program Director, and Jade Hargrafen, County Youth Coordinator.  Along with meeting the staff, take this opportunity to learn more about the different programs nad resources that Iowa State University Extension and Outreach can provide to families, businesses, and the community.

Joann and Martin Kruse of Delaware County were inducted into the 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 17. Eighty-two counties participated this year and 110 inductees were recognized for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they were introduced on stage and honored at a reception that followed the ceremony.

More than half of Iowa farmland is rented, and the percentage of farmland rented has increased over time due to the changing demographics of farmland owners. Iowa farmland cash rental rates decreased by $10 an acre from 2013 to 2014; northeast Iowa cash rental rates decreased by over 1.4 percent in 2014. Additionally, farmland values have increased by 7.4 percent in northeast Iowa from 2012 to 2013, but have leveled off in the first quarter of 2014.

 The 4-H and FFA livestock sale totaled $306,449.68 at the 2014 Delaware County Fair, according to information provided by the Delaware County Extension Office.
