Rental rates for Iowa farmland decreased moderately in 2014 according to results from a survey carried out by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. This is the first decrease shown by the annual survey since 1999, according to William Edwards, retired extension economist who directs the survey.

ServSafe Certification Class/Training

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offers ServSafe  food safety certification classes.  ServSafe meets the criteria for an individual to become a "Certified Food Protection Manager" (CFPM).  ServSafe training will provide knowledge every food service provider must know about food hazards and proper food handling practices in order to keep food safe and protect the establishment against the costly nightmare of a foodborne-illness outbreak. Participants will learn ways of prevention, regulatory requirements, and how to improve food quality.

This series of talks are provided for the public to give them information about gardening topics.   Each lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church at 116 Guetzko Court in Manchester.  The Delaware County Master Gardeners ask for a $2 donation to cover the cost of bringing in these speakers.*

Propane Cost Pork Producers

The recent spike in propane prices is additional incentive for pork producers to conserve heating energy.  Producers may have propane contracted at a reasonable rate, but managing heating costs should always be a priority, especially when expenses are rising.

Dairy Iowa Profitability Team Iowa State University Extension

Iowa dairy farm operations need to be profitable and today have access to many on-farm services to aid them with management and technology issues.  Sometimes a dairy producer can have a challenge with a certain farm practice, or perhaps they want to take their operation to the next level.  These may require a team management approach of their key dairy suppliers.  With these in mind, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, plus several industry partners, have created the Dairy Iowa Profitability Team.

ISU Extension and Outreach’s Regional Foods Coordinator, Brittany Bethel, is among the recipients of the Nourish Iowa Awards, established to recognize individuals and organizations who have made a significant impact on the advancement of food security, food access and health at the community, regional or state levels.  Bethel conducted a live food demonstration and recipe tasting at the Manchester Farmers’ Market in August.

Delaware County 4-H Youth in Action hosted their annual fun day at Bailey’s Ford Park in Manchester. Clover, the 4-H Clown made an appearance during the scavenger hunt. Attendees also played sand volleyball, soccer, water balloon volleyball and had a water balloon fight to help beat the heat. The attendees are pictured here with Clover.
