Farm related injuries are 2.5 percent more likely to require amputation than any other industry. Tragically, many of the victims are children, according to Northwestern University’s recently published Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology journal. To help combat these farm-related incidents and other risks on farms, Monsanto has partnered with Progressive Agriculture Foundation to host Farm Safety Days. Over the past few weeks several Progressive Agriculture Safety Days have taken place in Delaware County and more than 800 participants, volunteers and local FFA members came out to help make these days a huge success. Cash Rental Rates for Iowa 2013

Rental rates for Iowa farmland have been pushed significantly higher by the favorable corn and soybean prices that farmers have enjoyed since 2010. This trend continued in 2013, but the rate of increase slowed considerably.  Delaware County farmland rental rate averaged $310 per acre, an increase of $25 per acre or 8% from last year. 

Knife Skills Workshop

Fourteen food service employees from West Delaware Schools participated in a food safety and knife skills workshop on April 3, offered by Delaware County- Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.  Cindy Baumgartner, Nutrition and Health Specialist for ISU Extension, was the instructor. Individuals who took part in the workshop included Kim Sperfslage, Tina Mead, Mary Offerman, Traci Lewin, Jamie Jones, Tina Maloney, Nancy Hough, Kinzy Gibbs, Helen Heyer, Diane Klein, Jeannie Wood, Mary Jo Larsen, Sarah Kluesner & Judy Errthum.

Iowa State University Extension is offering several ServSafe® classes for food service professionals. ServSafe® training will provide knowledge every food service provider must know about food hazards and proper food handling practices in order to keep food safe and protect the establishment against the costly nightmare of a foodborne-illness outbreak. Participants will learn ways of prevention, regulatory requirements, and how to improve food quality.

Families who keep receipts for their back-to-school expenses may be able to save money on their Iowa taxes next winter!  The Iowa K-12 Tuition and Textbook Credit applies not just to “Tuition” and “Textbooks,” but also to most required materials for classes and extra-curricular activities, according to Susan Taylor, Family Finance Program Specialist with Iowa State University Extension.  School registration fees also qualify.
