A special workshop for area beef cow-calf producers is slated for Tuesday, May 13 from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. at the Decatur County Fairgrounds 4-H Building in Leon. The program is being presented by Iowa State University Extension, Decatur County Office in conjunction with the Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University and the Decatur County Cattlemen’s Association.
Program presenters will include Joe Sellers, area ISU Extension Livestock Field Specialist, discussing how fast things are changing in the cow-calf business; Dr. James Mintert, Kansas State University, speaking on the outlook for the cow-calf industry and his BeefBasis.com web site at KSU; Dr. Daryl Strohben, Iowa State University Extension Beef Specialist, will discuss managing feed costs and optimizing production; and rounding out the program will be Brian Peterson, Natural Resources Conservation Service, talking about managed haying and grazing of CRP and recreation acres.
According to Joe Sellers, these highly respected experts in the beef cattle industry will be in the area presenting at the annual Veterinary Update to be held at the McNay Research farm earlier that day. “We like to utilize their expertise with local producers while they are here”, said Sellers. “This presentation in Leon will be good to serve those producers in the South Central Iowa and North Central Missouri area.”
Both the program and hamburger meal are free, meal courtesy of Great Western Bank and Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri, program co-sponsors, will be grilled and served by the Decatur County Cattlemen’s Association. Producers are encouraged to call in if they plan to attend for meal planning purposes. Call the Decatur County ISU Extension Office at (641)446-4723 to reserve your place or call Joe Sellers at 641-774-2016 for more details about the program.
