Decatur County 4-H’ers were part of a big green 4-H wave cheering for the Iowa State University women’s basketball team in their game against Kansas, March 7, at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. The Decatur County Boosters and Decatur County Achievers 4-H Clubs joined more than 950 4-H’ers from throughout the state sporting Iowa State T-shirts in vibrant 4-H green.
“Nothing compares to 4-H night at a Cyclone basketball game,” Shelly Greving, of the Iowa 4-H Foundation said. “This was a great way for 4-H’ers from all across Iowa to connect, and it provides an opportunity, beyond the county, to get out and meet other 4-H’ers in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s was also a fun opportunity to support Cyclone women’s basketball.”
The Iowa 4-H Foundation sponsored an initial ticket promotion, including the custom T-shirts for 4-H’ers and their families and friends, Greving said. “After the deadline passed and the T-shirts were spoken for, we thought we’d seen the end of the interest,” Greving noted. “But more than 200 more 4-H’ers and their families purchased tickets through regular Cyclone channels so they could participate as well. It was a great showing for Iowa 4-H.”
During 4-H Night a basketball autographed by Bill Fennelley and the women’s team was given away to a lucky fan. Glen and Mary Jo Mente were honored as friends of 4-H, in a ceremony showcasing their commitment to the 4-H program.
4-H is a community of 6 million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames.
