When you see the eyes light up as members discover they have achieved something they didn’t think they could do; when one member takes what he or she has learned, begins to teach a younger member; when you can see the growth in a shy member who entered the club three years ago and today is able to get up in front of people to explain something or take on a leadership role and mentor other members, you can begin to understand why it is such a joy of being a local 4-H leader.. It is their energy, their eagerness, their fun and wiliness to learn that energizes me. I want to challenge each member within that member’s ability; teach skills that will last all their lives and plan an environment in which all ages of my members can feel comfortable and welcome. People keep asking me how come I’ve been a 4-H leader for 48 years and I tell them, “Because I still enjoy it and I am having fun.”

Choosing to be a Clover Kid leader is a fantastic volunteer opportunity! Not only do I get to do something fun with my own kids, I get to pass on my passion for 4-H and agriculture to them and other children beginning at an early age. The kids are so much fun! In this age group, there is such a variety of things you can do and they are so eager to learn new things. You can do just about anything! I think I learn just as much as them sometimes... There is excellent support through the ISU Extension Office and always the resources you need to succeed with your group.
