ISU Offers Comprehensive Educational Program for Horse Enthusiasts

Iowa State University Extension will be offering a comprehensive educational program for adults that teaches the science of horse management along with riding and training concepts. The Master Equine Manager program combines discussion with hands-on experience. People who complete the six, three-hour core curriculum sessions and two optional interest-specific sessions will become certified Master Equine Managers.

The program was developed by Iowa State University Extension staff to enhance the growing horse industry in Iowa. Iowa State University (ISU) Extension began offering the Master Equine Manager program in Iowa in the Spring of 2005. The program will be offered in Dallas and Guthrie Counties starting September 15 and is limited to the first 20 participants with paid registrations.

Organizers designed the Master Equine Manager Program to inform and educate adults on quality horse care and responsible horse ownership. The program hopes to strengthen the quality and economic growth of the Iowa horse industry. Program instructors are considered experts in their field and include professionals from academic, research and business. The six core topics include nutrition and feeding; health care; selection and evaluation; facilities and equipment; exercise and conditioning; and hoof care.

Participants will receive valuable resource materials and certification by Iowa State University. Continuing Education Units are available upon request.

The program costs $550 and includes refreshments, materials, instructors, facilities and certification. For more information or to register for the Master Equine Manager program, contact Linda Nelson at 992-4281 or lsnelson@iastate.edu or visit www.extension.iastate.edu/MasterEquine.
