4-H’ers and Clover Kids Grace the Catwalk

Iowa State Extension and Outreach of Dallas County 4-H are digging through their closets, garments scattered across the floor, declaring, “I just don’t know what to wear!” Finding the perfect outfit can be challenging, and the pressure is on to pull together the perfect ensemble to be judged during the Annual 4-H Clothing Event on Saturday, June 14.

Youth can choose to participate in one, two or all three of the clothing categories—purchased garments, constructed garments and the $15 challenge.

Purchased garments will be evaluated not only on style but on the practicality of the attire. Youth will be expected to explain to the judge what kind of situation the selection would be appropriate for and what makes it functional for that specific event. Constructed garments will be handmade by the wearer, allowing them to bring their vision of the perfect outfit to life through fabric and stitching. The $15 (or less) challenge incorporates the theme of “dress for less” as youth assemble garb found at garage sales or thrift stores in a way that transforms inexpensive items into stylish threads.

A Style Show will follow judging, and the public are invited to attend. The show will begin at 4 p.m. at the Grace West Church in West Des Moines. Refreshments will be served after the show as family and friends congratulate their 4-H’er or Clover Kid for a job well done.
