Ages & Stages

Allowances
You can teach your child the value of money with a regular allowance.

* Start at age 5 or 6 when she understands that money and shopping are related.
* How much? Some recommend 50 cents/week for every year of a child's age - so your 10-year-old would get $5/week. Others recommend $1/week for each year of age. What's right depends on 3 factors - child's level of development, what YOU can afford, and what it is supposed to cover.
* Tie allowances to financial responsibilities. For 6 year olds, let them pay for sports cards & candy; 10 year olds can buy their own movie tickets; 16 year olds can buy clothes and gas with their allowance.
* Give allowances in denominations that encourage saving - if the amount is $5, give five $1 bills and encourage at least one or two be set aside in savings.

Me & My Dad Olympic Play Activity: Olympic Playland
* Gather supplies such as a pillow, 6 foot long rope, card table, blanket, cardboard box.
* Create an obstacle course by setting the items around the room with plenty of space in between each.
* Demonstrate the course by crawling through the box, walk on the rope like a balance beam, go under the table with the blanket draped over it, or lay the blanket flat and roll or somersault across it; hop on or over the pillow, etc.
* Run between items.
* Take turns with your child running the course. Change the order or items as you wish.
* Rest while you enjoy your Gold Medals!
