If you have a child in school, you may have already heard about the new "Smart Snack" guidelines going into effect this year in Iowa schools that participate in the federal school lunch program. The 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids’ Act updated the nutrition standards for snacks and beverages sold in school vending machines, via a la carte sales in the cafeteria, and at school stores and some fundraisers.

 Frost? – Some fields show the effects of the frost last Saturday morning. Others look like they escaped unscathed. I have not seen a field totally killed from that frost, most show damage to the top leaves, but have green leaves in mid-canopy, and a green stalk or stem. That helps!

Smart Choice

Iowans have two sources of information to help them prepare to select health insurance coverage when open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act begins again Nov. 15. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering “Smart Choice: Health Insurance” classes throughout the state this fall. In addition, the Iowa Department of Human Services has a new website where Iowa Health and Wellness members can find information about premium free coverage in 2015.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host a series of meetings this fall for growers producing crops in high tunnels. Three meeting sites will offer the beginning “High Tunnel 101” workshop to current commercial fruit or vegetable growers and traditional farmers interested in diversifying their production.
