Emerald Ash Borer has been positively identified in the city of Clinton, making this the 20th county in Iowa where this wood boring pest of ash trees has been found. EAB kills all ash tree species and is considered to be one of the most destructive tree pests ever seen in North America.

Russ Euken, ISU Extension and Outreach beef program specialist, said the workshops, set in various locations throughout the state, will offer an overview of facility types, advantages and disadvantages, and review research on these types.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach released its annual publication titled Estimated Costs of Crop Production in Iowa – 2015. The publication is intended to help farmers determine their own potential 2015 crop costs per acre and per bushel. The calculations take into consideration the various crop costs like tillage practices, machinery, inputs, labor and land for varying yield expectations.

Betty Abel is entering her fifth year of preparing tax returns at the Welcome We Help Inc. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site in Corydon, Iowa. Abel joins a team of accountants, clergy, retired professionals and students throughout the state who volunteer to prepare tax returns for low-income clients through this program, known as VITA.

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will explore how Master Gardeners support local food systems during a winter webinar series. The 2015 series will offer Master Gardeners educational hours while taking a look at ways to support school gardens, food banks, community gardens and more. Sessions are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15, Feb. 12, and March 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at ISU Extension county offices across Iowa.

Average Iowa farmland value is now estimated to be $7,943 per acre—a drop in value of $773, or 8.9 percent, per acre. Land values were determined by the Iowa Land Value Survey, which was conducted in November by the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at Iowa State University. Results from the survey are similar to results found by the Realtors Land Institute and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Denison,IA – Farmers and landowners will learn about the new programs authorized by the Agricultural Act of 2014 (commonly referred to as the Farm Bill) at an informational meeting conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and local USDA Farm Service Agency staff members. Meetings will be held on December 11, 2014 at Donna Reed Theatre and December 18, 2014 at the Charter Oak Community Building, Charter Oak.
