Action Planning Definitions

Instructions: Many people back away from planning because they think it is a difficult and complicated process. Actually, planning is something we all do to set goals and organize our lives. It's nothing new or revolutionary.

This worksheet outlines a simple, logical step-by-step process that really works. There are no right or wrong answers. Use your imagination and have fun.

GOAL
A sentence or brief paragraph which states one goal in concise, easy to understand terms. The goal should be thought of as the end.

CAPACITY
An inventory of the resources that can be committed to the goal, such as money, expertise, volunteers, local organizations, etc. Demonstrate that the resources are sufficient to execute the goal.

PAYOFF
Describe the expected benefits that will result from executing the goal. Be as specific as possible.

RISK
What is the possible "downside" of undertaking the goal? What will be lost if the goal fails altogether? Is the group willing and able to bear the risk?

STRATEGY
One or more statements of what needs to be accomplished in order to execute the goal -- the means to the end.

TASKS
For each strategy, a list that outlines the specific activities to be taken to carry out the strategy. What is the activity? Who will undertake the activity? When will the activity be completed?

Fill out the accompanying worksheet, beginning with the goal, capacity, payoff, and risk. Then proceed to develop strategies and supportive tasks to achieve the goal.
