Programs for Communities

Iowa leaders need data on their communities, skills in analysis, interpretation and information management as well as strategies for group visioning in order to plan and prepare their communities for the future.

  • Program Builder
    Program Builder provides you with the tools to construct personalized service agreements with Economic Development Service providers. Programs include services for economic development, leadership, government, governance, landscape revitalization, community visualizing, downtown restoration, parks, transportation, workshops, local government, geodatabase, nonprofit agencies, leadership and management.
  • Elderhostel Programs
    Discover Iowa’s communities. Elderhostel programs often visit people or places that are not accessible to the public.  Persons age 55+ can participate in these educational travel programs and learn about Iowa in a new and fascinating way.
  • PLaCE
    The PLaCE (Partnering Landscape and Community Enhancement) program aims to enhance and promote the quality and character of Iowa's landscapes and communities. The College of Design engages with communities in collaborative efforts to understand, envision and promote a fundamental enhancement of their physical environment.

    Past PLaCE projects have included city and county comprehensive plans, concept plans for city parks, historic district planning, and GIS-based planning and modeling. Products that communities receive vary from project to project, but typically include written reports, conceptual drawings, and/or GIS data. Please note that detailed construction plans are not a part of this program.
  • Community Visioning
    The Community Visioning Program integrates technical landscape planning and design techniques with sustainable community action to assist community leaders and volunteers in making sound and meaningful decisions about the local landscape. The program empowers local leaders through a planning process that results in an enhancement plan reflecting the values and identity of the community.
  • Geospatial Technology Program
    The ISU Extension Geospatial Technology Program is offering a series of hands-on short courses in geographic information systems (GIS) for local officials.
  • Take Charge
    Take Charge is a an economic development educational program developed and supported by the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development whereby leaders in small communities learn about their community and plan for its future. An important part of learning is studying factual indicators. The Take Charge web site has a number of pertinent indicators to "taking charge" and planning for economic development.
  • Geographic Information Systems Diagnostics
    The GIS Diagnostics Program is designed to assist public and private planning agencies improve the way GIS is being used in their environment. The program prescribes step-by-step strategies to help agencies maximize their use of the technology by incorporating spatial analysis in daily tasks.For more information, please contact Mônica A.   • CD-Dial

  • Community Vitality Center
    The Community Vitality Center is a catalyst for sharing innovative projects, best practices, lesson learned, and policy studies that improves the vitality of Iowa's communities and rural areas. CVC Initiatives focus on (1) building Community Entrepreneurship capacity, (2) creating a culture for Community Philanthropy, and (3) conducting Rural-Urban Policy Studies that lead to actionable local decisions and outcomes. CVC is a partnership between Iowa State University Extension and rural community leaders representing diverse interests from across Iowa.

  • ISU Extension Retail Trade Analysis Program
    Access to data and analysis regarding the history and current status of local retail sectors for individual counties and communities in Iowa.
  • Nonprofit Management Academy
    The Nonprofit Management Academy was established in 1999 by Iowa State University in partnership with the United Way Management Assistance Program to enhance the management skills of those serving nonprofit human services groups, hospitals, government agencies, churches, private schools, arts
    organizations, environmental groups, and others in the nonprofit sector.
