Geospatial Technology Program Offers ArcGIS 10.1 Courses
The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Geospatial Technology Program is offering a geographic information systems (GIS) short course this summer.
“Essentials of ArcGIS 10.1” is a two-day course that explores the new, easy-to-use features in ArcGIS 10.1: ArcMap, ArcToolbox and ArcCatalog. Participants receive hands-on instruction from experienced GIS specialists, along with a set of newly revised tutorials. The course is scheduled for 8:30–4:30 on August 22–23, 2013, and will be conducted at the ISU Extension Community and Economic Development Program office at the ISU Research Park in Ames.
Topics covered include displaying, projecting and editing data; working with tables; working with georeferenced data; querying a database and selecting features by location; and making good maps from the data. Although designed for those with no GIS experience, the course has been valuable for experienced GIS users to improve their skills. Experience using Windows-based applications is recommended.
For professionals looking for a way to simply get started with GIS technology, this IS the place to begin. The course begins by assuming no knowledge of GIS and builds from that point on to developing foundational skills. By day two, participants will be designing their own maps and doing simple geospatial analysis. Upon finishing the course, participants receive a certificate of completion, and our instructors continue to avail themselves to course graduate as they adapt their new skills to their own projects.
The fee for the two-day workshop is $500, which includes course tutorials, handouts, snacks and beverages. Lodging and meals are not included.
Advance registration is required and enrollment is limited to 12 participants per course. If two or more people from the same organization register for the same course(s) in this series, each registrant also will receive a 10% discount. An organization may reserve all 12 seats for a particular course at a 15% discount.
Alan Jensen, ISU Extension community development specialist, and Chris Seeger, ISU Extension landscape architect and associate professor of landscape architecture, will teach the short course. For more information, check out the new website at www.extension.iastate.edu/communities/gis or contact Nora Ladjahasan at email@example.com or 515-294-0734.
Those who attend “Essentials of ArcGIS 10.1” are eligible for the following continuing education credits (CEUs): ASLA 10.0 hours general, and ASLA 2.0 hours health, safety, and welfare. (A request for AICP CM 14.0 credits has been submitted and authorization is pending.)
