Municipal Professionals Institute & Academy

The dates for the 2015 Iowa Municipal Professionals Institute and Academy have been set.  The Institute will be held July 20-24 and 27-29, 2015 including the clerk and finance specialized certification courses the second week.  The registration fee for the Institute will vary by class.  Participants will be allowed to register for as many classes as they like during the two-week Institute period.  The fee for the three-day Academy will be $185.  The location of both the Institute and the Academy will be at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames, Iowa.  The Academy will be held July 29-31, 2015.

The Municipal Professionals Institute and Academy operated by ISU Extension has been in existence for 40 years and remains the largest of similar programs in the United States and Canada. The program, which brings participants to Ames each summer for in-depth training, provides the foundation education for various professional certifications.

The Iowa Municipal Professional Institute (MPI) stands as one of the nation's largest bringing together more than 200 municipal professionals each year.  The Iowa MPI offers a variety of courses to assist municipal professionals in their day-to-day duties. It also provides educational credit toward certification by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) and/or the two certifications by the Iowa Municipal Finance Officers Association (IMFOA). The annual courses allow for personalized interaction with faculty and staff from universities or other individuals involved with municipal administration while updating on new laws, programs and technology affecting Iowa municipal government.

The Iowa Municipal Professionals Institute Curriculum Self-Assessment Tool allows past participants to manage their courses and progress in the Institute.

Sweatshirt colors will be available for viewing early 2015.

The purpose of the continuing education training for city clerks, finance officers, and others is:

  • To provide training opportunities for clerks and municipal administrators so they can continue to get useful, up-to-date information that will assist them in their job performance.
  • To provide more in-depth training on a range of topics.
  • To help qualify interested clerks for membership in the International Institute of Municipal Clerks' Academy.
  • Opportunities to meet clerks from across the state - make friends and business acquaintances.
  • Updates on new laws, programs, and technology affecting Iowa municipal government.
  • Opportunity for credit toward recertification for IMFOA sponsored certifications.
  • Participate in building professional skills and credentials as the municipal clerk/finance officer.
