Utility Clerk Certification

 
The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) is offering a Utility Clerk Certification program. The certification program requires 3 years of experience as a utility clerk or its equivalent and employment by an IAMU member or associate member at the time the certificate is awarded.
 
 
Education Requirement:
  • 50 hours of basic training (offered at the Iowa Municipal Professionals Institute)
  • 25 hours of flex credits or the equivalent training in relevant areas (offered at the Institute OR through other acceptable training such as ATM. A relevant AA (15 flex credits) or BA (25 flex credits) can also be substituted.)
  • 25 hours of required specialized course work required as listed below:
    • Utility Accounting/Accrual
    • Fixed Asset Accounting/Inventory
    • Rule Making
    • Utility Software
    • Utility Trends
    • Work Orders/Managing Property & Personnel
    • Customer Service/Shutoffs
 
On-line Courses
 
IAMU shall maintain a list of on-line courses that are deemed by the Certification Committee to qualify under the Flexible and Specialized  curricula. On-line courses must include some type of testing or other means to ensure that the candidate attended and achieved a minimum level of subject matter comprehension. 
 
Fee
 
A fee of $50 is required at the time of application.  The fee is intended to offset some of the expenses for recordkeeping, committee meetings, and the certificate.
 
Record Keeping

All attendance records for the IAMU Certification Program will be managed by the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities database.  However, prior course work through the Iowa Municipal Professionals Institute which may be applied to the Utility Clerk Certification program must be documented by the applicant.
