The senior dairy judging team consisting of Gina Fisher, Edgewood; Monica Landsgard, Postville; and Jake Mills, Strawberry Point placed second in the state 4-H dairy judging contest held August 12 at the Iowa State Fair. The team placed first in the Jersey class, second in Reasons and in the Holstein class, third in the Ayrshire, Guernsey and Milking Shorthorn classes, and sixth in the Brown Swiss class.
Nine youth from Clayton County participated in the contest. In addition to the 2nd place team, Megan Moser, Colesburg; Zach Sauer, McGregor and Aaron Klosterman, West Union also judged in the senior division. Catie Lang, McGregor; Bobby Lang, McGregor and Tyler Fisher, Edgewood formed a junior team.
Individually, Gina Fisher placed 5th overall, 4th in Brown Swiss, 6th in Jerseys, 7th in reasons, and 10th in Guernsey. Mills placed 7th overall, 3rd in Ayrshire, 5th in Guernsey, Jersey and Reasons. Landsgard placed 8th overall, 9th in Ayrshire and 10th in Holsteins.
In the junior division the team placed fourth overall being 1st in Jersey, 3rd in Brown Swiss, Holsteins, 5th in Milking Shorthorn, 7th in Reasons, and 8th in Guernsey. Individually Tyler Fisher placed 2nd in Jersey, 4th in Reasons, 5th in Ayrshire, and 10th in Holstein. Catie Lang placed 1st overall and 4th in Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein and 6th in Jersey.
The Clayton County dairy judging teams are coached by Trent & Leslie Henkes, Luana and Larry Landsgard, St. Olaf.
Fourteen senior teams and thirteen junior teams entered the state contest. Contestants judged eight classes of dairy heifers and cows. Senior team members gave four sets of oral reasons while the junior team members gave two sets of oral reasons. Winneshiek County won the senior division and Dubuque County won the junior division.
