Students from Central Elkader, Clayton Ridge and Guttenberg St. Mary's schools have participated in Iowa's Dairy Story during April and May. Photos
Iowa State University Extension, Northeast Iowa Community College and the NE Iowa Dairy Foundation collaborate on a special hands-on dairy field trip as part of a Dairy youth curriculum for grades 3, 4, & 5. The program includes up to eight lessons in the classroom prior to the field trip that includes: a Tour of the Hall of Breeds, and a map display of Iowa and the United States, exploring the dairy history, dairy cows and nutrition and science through a Milk Cart Quiz, discovering how milk produced in northeast Iowa goes from the farm to your home, learning about nutritional products and their importance to growth and development. The youth make and eat a milk treat – ice cream, see what a cow eats each day and tour the stomach of the dairy cow. For more information about Iowa’s Dairy Story contact your county extension office.
