Shooting Sports Instructors

The Clayton County Extension Service is pleased to announce the start of a new program in Clayton County – 4-H Shooting Sports.    Iowa 4-H Safety and Education Shooting Sports is a program aimed at helping youth learn about the safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment.  The 4-H Shooting Sports program offers five disciplines to youth – Archery, Muzzleloader, Rifle, Shotgun and Wildlife Skills. This program will be delivered through the Extension 4-H & Youth program and will be considered a club on its own.

Certified instructors are required for this program and in April six volunteers attended training at the state 4-H camp in Madrid.  Instructors will be meeting monthly with interested youth for safety education and shooting. Daniel Thornton, McGregor is trained as the County Coordinator and in Rifle. Dawn Amundson, Elgin will be the Wildlife Skills instructor.  Jay Farmer, Strawberry Point is trained in the muzzleloader discipline.  Travis Priem, New Vienna and Dennis Wolter, Garnavillo will be working with the shotgun discipline.  Jerry Farmer, Strawberry Point will be the archery instructor.

Youth in 4th -12th grade who are interested in the Shooting Sports program must be enrolled in the Safety Education in Shooting Sports 4-H project and have a completed medical/information release form on file at the Clayton County Extension Office in Elkader.  Contact the Clayton County Extension Office at 563-245-1451 for more information.
