Safety Day Held for Fourth Grade Students
The Clayton County Extension Service hosted a safety day on May 11at the Clayton County Fairground in National. 156 fourth grade students from Elkader Central, MFL MarMac, Ed-Co, and Postville schools attended the day long event.
Sessions included Fire Safety presented by the Garnavillo Fire Department; Internet Safety presented by Sarah Hertrampf, Alpine Communications.; Tobacco Awareness given by Adam Sadewasser, Clayton County Substance Abuse; Animal Safety presented by Jason & Kelly Mueller, Strawberry Point; Electrical Safety presented by Gary Passmore and John Molumby, Allamakee-Clayton Electric; Farm Safety for Kids by Lynn Berg, Farm Service Agency; Propane Gas Safety presented by Three Rivers FS; Food Safety presented by Theresa Eberhardt of Elkader; ATV Safety given by Matt Henkes, ISU Extension Clayton County; Firearm & Hunting Safety presented by Julie Doeppke, American Family Insurance, Elkader; Alcohol Awareness presented by Tracy Yelden, Clayton Co. Community Collaboration Council: Surviving a Farm Accident by Paul Olinger, Strawberry Point; and PTO Safety presented by Bill Rodman, Bodensteiner Implement Company, Elkader.
The afternoon was completed with an ice cream treat provided by the Clayton County Dairy Promotion Committee for all the students, teachers, helpers, and presenters.
The Clayton County Extension Service has been involved with Safety Day since 1992. The objective of the event is to increase public awareness and to prevent and educate youth about household and farm health hazards and injuries.
