The Clayton County Extension Service hosted a Safety Day on May 8th at the Clayton County Fairground in National. 244 fourth grade students from Elkader Central, MFL MarMac, Clayton Ridge, Ed-Co, Valley, and Postville schools attended the daylong event.
Sessions included Fire Safety presented by the Elkader Fire Department; Sun Safety given by Barb Sauser, ISU Extension; Internet Safety presented by Sarah Hertrampf, Alpine Communications; Tobacco Awareness given by Merry French, Clayton County Substance Abuse; Animal Safety presented by Amos Troester, Garnavillo, Melissa Lenth, Luana and Jeff Mueller, Strawberry Point; Lawn Mower Safety given by Jeff Dare, NECAS, Peosta: Electrical Safety presented by John Molumby, Allamakee-Clayton Electric; Farm Safety for Kids by Lynn Berg, Farm Service Agency; Propane Gas Safety presented by Jeff Bohle, Three Rivers FS; ATV Safety presented by Stan Marovets, Clayton County Farm Bureau; PTO Safety presented by Kevin Welsh, Bodensteiner Implement Company, Elkader; Food Safety given by Theresa Eberhardt, Elkader; and Firearm & Hunting Safety presented by Dan Thornton, McGregor.
The afternoon was completed with an ice cream treat provided by the Clayton County Dairy Promotion Committee for all the students, teachers, helpers, and presenters.
The Clayton County Extension Service has been involved with Safety Day since 1992. The objective
of the event is to increase public awareness and to prevent and educate youth about household and farm
health hazards and injuries.
