April 11, 2014

Clayton County Extension is again offering the special broiler class for the 2014 Clayton County Fair.  The broiler project is an opportunity for a 4-H or FFA member to gain valuable experience in raising chicks to broiler-weight through partnership with a local sponsor. The deadline to order birds for the Special Broiler Project Class is May 15.

The annual Clayton County Dairy Banquet will be Friday, June 6 at Johnson's Reception Hall in Elkader. Serving will be from 6:30 -8:30 pm with the program starting at 8:00 pm. Nominations are being sought by May 1 for Clayton County Distinguished Dairy Producer Award, Outstanding Young Dairy Producer Award, and the Senior Dairy Producer Award.  Dairy producers can also nominate their cows for the 200,000/7,000 Lifetime Production Club.

On April 12 twenty-nine Clayton County 4-H and FFA members weighed in 161 head for the 2014 swine derby show at the Clayton County Fair. This county fair competition uses the rate-of-gain and lean-gain-per-day along with visual appraisal by the judge for evaluation.

January 26, 2013

Ninety-four Clayton County 4-H & FFA members have weighed and identified 253 head of market beef as projects this year.  This is up 9 youth and 7 head from 2012.  Identified for 2013 were 181 Market Steers, 48 Dairy Steers and 24 Market Heifers. The Market Steers averaged 628.6 lbs., the Dairy Steers averaged 568.4 lbs. and the Market Heifers averaged 583.7 lbs.
