October 9, 2015

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Clayton County office will host an Aquatic, Forest, and Right-of-Way Continuing Instructional Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators on Wednesday, October 21, 2015. The program can be seen at office locations across Iowa through the ISU Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) team.

The Clayton County Cattlemen’s Association will be awarding a scholarship to a deserving 2015 High School Graduate who is attending an accredited four year college or an accredited two year technical institute in the 2015-2016 school year.  The scholarship will be presented at the Clayton County Cattlemen’s Association Banquet on November 21 at Johnson’s Reception Hall in Elkader.  Applications are due October 31.

Iowa MarketReady Training is for local food producers (fruit, vegetable, meat, dairy, eggs and value-added products) who currently sell their products direct to consumers (farmers’ markets, CSA, roadside stands, etc) and are looking to scale up to wholesale marketing to restaurants, grocery stores, and institutions.

A workshop for professional advisors including estate planning attorneys, financial planners, trust officers, public accountants and others who advise on financial planning and charitable giving, will be conducted at the Wilder Business Center on the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), Calmar Campus on Thursday, October 29.

A team of Ted Hilgerson, Tom Shirbroun, Kennie Orr and Luke Orr won the 2015 annual crop scouting competition.  The contest was created to increase high school students’ awareness of Iowa agriculture using hands-on learning and teamwork. Topics at this year’s event included crop diseases, insects and disorders, weed identification, estimating corn yield, crop growth stages, soil sampling, deciphering aerial imagery and using a tablet-based scouting app.

Extension council members are elected officials and are responsible for being good stewards of taxpayer dollars. They manage the county extension budget, hire county staff and help select educational programming from ISU Extension and Outreach.
