March 12, 2013

Expanding knowledge of state government and communicating with legislators in Des Moines was the focus of the March 6 visit to the Iowa State Capitol by twenty-eight 4-H’ers and nine adults  representing Chickasaw, Clayton and Fayette Counties.

October 25, 2012

The Northeast Iowa 4-H FFI Regional Leadership Team met in West Union on October 18 with their FFI 4-H Coaches and County Youth Coordinators. Fifteen schools were represented and youth participated in a local food tour to Rolling Hills Greenhouse, prepared a youth FEEST, learned more about the national changes to school lunch menus and were given a communication challenge.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H staff and volunteers participated in a GEAR TECH 21 training. GEAR TECH 21 is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) robotics curriculum that teaches students ages 9-14 about building, programming, testing and using global positioning systems to operate robots.

Delores Schultz of McGregor was honored at the 2012 Iowa State Fair as Clayton County 4-H Hall of Fame winner.  She has been active in 4-H for nearly 70 years.   Delores was a 4-H leader for 27 years and still is very supportive of the program.

Molly Andersen, a member of the Jefferson Go Hawks 4-H Club  received one of the 42 photography medals for an outstanding 4-H photography exhibit sponsored by The Professional Photographers of Iowa. Molly’s photograph of Mount Rushmore was exhibited in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Melissa Heims of Edgewood earned the Iowa State Fair’s Top 10 Percent Award in Fashion Revueduring the 2012 State Fair 4-H Awardrobe Clothing Event.  Also participating from Clayton County were Rachel Moser, Colesburg, Haley Bergan, Edgewood and Ryan Moser Colesburg. The 4-H Awardrobe Clothing Event consists of three categories: Clothing Selection,  Fashion Revue,  and The $15 Challenge.

The Clayton County Extension Service hosted a safety day on May 11 at the Clayton County Fairground in National. 156 fourth grade students from Elkader Central, MFL MarMac, Ed-Co, and Postville schools attended the day long event.  The Clayton County Extension Service has been involved with Safety Day since 1992. The objective of the event is to increase public awareness and to prevent and educate youth about household and farm health hazards and injuries.

The annual Clayton County 4-H Omelet Brunch & Silent Auction rasied over $6000 for the county 4-H & youth program. 785 people were served omelets made personally by members of the 4-H County Council.

Nearly 400 people attended the annual 4-H Pizzazz Night on Sunday, November 20 at Johnson’s Reception Hall in Elkader. The evening started off with the annual spaghetti supper followed by the awards program. The year-end celebration honored both 4-H club
