August 29, 2014

Clayton County 4-H Crop Scouting teams took first and second place honors in the fourth annual Crop Scouting Competition conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach on August 5. First place team members included Sam Hilgerson, Ted Hilgerson and Luke Orr from Elkader, Tom Shirbroun, Farmersburg and Kennie Orr of Elgin. Second place team members were Melanie Lane and Matt Whittle of Elkader, Cole Deitchler, Volga and Andrey Shirbroun, Farmersburg. The groups were coached by Joe & Suzanne Shirbroun of Farmersburg.

Sandy Ruckhaber of Luana was inducted into the 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 17. Eighty-two counties participated this year and 110 inductees were recognized for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they were introduced on stage and honored at a reception that followed the ceremony.

Recognition for an Outstanding Agriculture and Natural Resources Exhibit at the Iowa State Fair has been given to a Clayton County 4-H member.  Charlie Ehlers, Edgewood received the Judges’ Choice Award and the Iowa State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences “Future Discovery Award”. The award includes a $500 Scholarship to be awarded upon enrollment at Iowa State University in a Liberal Arts and Sciences College Major. The award is judged on exemplifying the innovation, curiosity, and scholarship foundational to a liberal arts and science education.  Charlie’s display was research and a poster on Polydactyl Cats. The project was exhibited in the 4-H Exhibit Building at the Iowa State Fair along with over 300 other entries.

Medals have been awarded to Clayton County 4-H members Rachel Anderegg, Guttenberg and Matt Eiben, Colesburg.  These outstanding 4-H photography project awards are sponsored by The Professional Photographers of Iowa.  The projects were exhibited in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.  Rachel is a member of the Jefferson Go Hawks 4-H Club and has been enrolled in the photography project for six years. Matt is a member of the Mallory Minks 4-H club and has been enrolled in photography project for 3 years.

Andrey Shirbroun, Farmersburg, received special recognition at the Iowa State Fair with his citizenship exhibit on Norman Borlaug.  His exhibit “An Iowa Farm Boy Who Became a Citizen of the World” was inspired by a recent 4-H Citizenship trip to Washington DC where Borlaug was recently honored.

Fourteen Clayton County 4-H members partipcapted in showmanship contests at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Kaitlyn Olson, a member of the Monona Jr. Feeders 4-H Club received a purple ribbon for her outstanding ability in the sheep show ring.  Others from Clayton County all received blue ribbons.

23 Clayton County 4-H youth showed livestock during the Iowa State Fair. "Youth gain so many positive skills by exhibiting livestock," Mike Anderson, 4-H agriculture superintendent said. "The dedication, responsibility, decision-making and leadership they develop can prepare them for careers that use these skills."

Clayton County Extension Youth & 4-H Committee is pleased to announce the new members for the 2014-15 4-H County Council. 4-H members selected were Darci Eberhardt, Elkader; Bailey Martins, Luana; Kaylie Weber, Strawberry Point; Tom Shirbroun, Farmersburg and Karl Klocke, Arlington.  County Council will be honored during the Share-the Fun Program on Wednesday evening, July 30 at the Clayton County Fair.

Clayton County 4-H and FFA members have entered 2923 exhibits for the county fair competition according to Tammy Muller, County 4-H & Youth Program Coordinator.   The 160th annual Clayton County Fair is scheduled for July 30 – August 4, 2014 at the fairgrounds located at the village of National (5 miles north of Garnavillo).

Clayton County 4-H and FFA members recently competed in their annual Advanced Cattle Feeding Program on June 16 in Edgewood. Participants entered their cattle into the program in December and began tracking all of their income and expenses. On June 16 their projects were ultra-sounded for market acceptability.  Presentations were given to a judge and to the crowd in attendance and the participants were ranked on their knowledge of their cattle.

500 parents, students and guests from school districts throughout Northeast Iowa made their way to Calmar on Thursday, April 24, for the second annual Northeast Iowa Family STEM Festival. This free event, offered students a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on experiments and activities provided.

Families from throughout Northeast Iowa made their way to Calmar on Thursday, April 24, to experience the second annual Northeast Iowa Family STEM Festival on the Northeast Iowa Community College Campus.   The STEM Festival offered the more than 500 students, parents, teachers and guests in attendance a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on experiments and activities provided. Iowa’s 4-H program has a long standing tradition of STEM inclusion in its programming.

Members of the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H program in Northeast Iowa recently completed the second year of a two year citizenship program and visited Washington DC.  Participants have been meeting on a monthly basis to learn more about citizenship and the role that government plays in their daily lives. While in Washington DC the group volunteered at DC Kitchens and prepared over 5000 meals to be served in homeless shelters and schools. Additionally the 4-H members prepared summer packages for homeless people to help them with the struggles that the summer heat can bring for them. In the first year of the program participants travel to the State Capitol and learn about local, county and state level government.

Over 225 people attended the annual 4-H Pizzazz Night at Johnson’s Reception Hall in Elkader on Sunday, November 17. The year-end celebration honored both 4-H club members and adult volunteers. A spaghetti supper was held prior to the awards program as a county fundraiser.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H volunteers from Allamakee, Howard, Clayton and Winneshiek Counties participated in the New Volunteer Training held at the Postville YMCA on October 12, 2013. Participants in the New Volunteer training learned to enhance their success in delivering the 4-H program and to enrich the volunteer’s experience.

Lendall & Fern Schievelbein of Farmersburg were honored at the 2013 Iowa State Fair as Clayton County 4-H Hall of Fame winners.  Counties select inductees for their exceptional work in contributing to the lives of 4-H members and the overall 4-H program. Many inductees served as club leaders, youth mentors, fair superintendents or fair board members, Iowa State University Extension county council members, county youth council members, fair judges, financial supporters, chaperones or ISU Extension staff members. The inductees have demonstrated dedication, encouragement, commitment and guidance to Iowa’s 4-H’ers through the years.

A team of Clayton County 4-H'ers has won the third annual Crop Scouting Competition conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach on August 1. Team members included Sam Hilgerson and Luke Orr from Elkader, Joe Kann from Guttenberg, and Glyn Powell from Strawberry Point. The group was coached by Joe Shirbroun of Farmersburg. The competition was created to increase high school students’ awareness of Iowa agriculture through hands-on learning and teamwork. Students apply integrated pest management principles to corn and soybean scouting experiences as they prepare for and participate in the competition.

Clayton County 4-H'ers assembled some of the more than 3600 static exhibit entries judged in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair. These 4-H'ers have demonstrated outstanding learning in leadership, citizenship, communication and other topics related to individual goals set by the members.

Jayna Felder, Emily Krausand Kaitlin Orr have been recognized for an outstanding exhibits at the Iowa State Fair. Their exhibts were among the 3612 4-H exhibits on display during the 2013 Iowa State Fair.
