Projects vs. Exhibits

Project Area:

A 4-H project is an area of emphasis in which a 4-H’er enrolls, studies, learns, keeps records and perhaps, exhibits.  A 4-H’er can complete work in a project area without exhibiting at the county fair.

  • Project Area examples: food and nutrition, visual arts, and photography.
  • A complete list of project areas in which 4-H'ers may enroll can be found in the Pick-A-Project publication.

Exhibit:

A 4-H exhibit is an item created resulting from project work. The 4-H’er may choose to bring the exhibit to Achievement Day and then display the exhibit during the fair. The exhibit will be evaluated by a judge during Achievement Day and put on display during the fair.

A 4-H exhibit should be the best example the 4-H'er has to showcase knowledge or skills gained by working throughout the year in a given project area.

4-H Exhibit examples:

  • Plate of muffins
  • Display box with comparison of homemade versus purchased granola bars
  • Poster displaying food safety information
  • Clay pot
  • Watercolor painting
  • Portfolio of charcoal drawings showing examples of practicing drawing techniques
  • Mounted photograph
  • Matted photography series
  • Poster explaining computer enhancement techniques
  • Exhibit possibilities are limitless
  • Clay County 4-H members should refer to the 4-H Static Exhibit section of the 2007-2009 4-H & FFA Fair Book 4-H for exhibit rules
