Abby making "Blobber" during Clover Kids

The Clay County 4-H Clover Kids program concluded its first session of hands-on science learning experiences this week.  Thirty-one children, grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade, participated this first year in the afterschool program that was held on early out days through a partnership with the Spencer school district.

ISU Extension’s 4-H SpIn Program partnered with Bogenrief Studios of Spencer to offer an amazing opportunity for Clay County 4-Hers.  The youth were able to create their own sculptures with the leadership and help of artist, Jesse Bogenrief.

The “Canine Good Citizen” 6 week SpIn Event taught by Kathy Launderville, Clay County 4-H Dog Committee member, concluded this week with a dog and handler evaluation conducted by Ron Meerdink of Orange City.

Clay County hosted an afternoon SpIn Event, Aaron Eilerts Service Learning Day for area youth in grades 3-12 which focused on making “Dresses for Haiti”.  The SpIn (Special Interest) Event was an exciting way for youth to connect with a project that involved citizenship and meaningful service to their community and to their world.

An educational program sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Ellsworth Community College for Iowa youth involved with beef production will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the Ellsworth Agriculture and Renewable Energy Center, Hwy 65 south, at 705 Ellsworth Ave., Iowa Falls, Iowa.  The youth program will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m.

It might be easy to assume that young ones are not impacted by tragic events in other parts of the country, but children have a keen sense of radar and pick up on our body language, adult conversations, and news media stories.  Malisa Rader, a family life program specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, suggests parents be reassuring, monitor their TV viewing when children are present and watch for signs of stress in their child.

Making decisions about what to purchase is an everyday activity that Northwest Iowa 4-Hers explored in a “District Consumer Judging” contest at the 2012 Clay County Fair.  4-Hers representing ten Northwest Iowa counties tested their consumer management skills Saturday, September 15th, 2012, weighing factors such as nutritional values, product services, price, quality and need.
