The ISU Extension Clay County office is hosting a professional development class on “How to Strategically Plan and Perform in a Chaotic Non-Profit World” on Thursday, October 15 at the Iowa Lakes Community College Spencer Campus.

“Effective Leadership” will be taught by ISU Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development Specialist, Jane Goeken.  In this all-day session, participants will learn how to lead effective meetings, deal with controversy, and manage change when working with boards or other groups.  Those attending will improve their leadership skills, and increase their effectiveness in their professional positions, volunteer roles, and in their community.

The 2014 Iowa State Fair, held in Des Moines, ran from August 7 through August 17 and found many 4-H youth from Clay County competing in 4-H static exhibit, clothing and communication events.  The Iowa State Fair is a great part of Iowa’s heritage and hosts an abundance of opportunities for 4-Hers and their families.

Donations to the Clay County 4-H Endowment help local youth to become strong leaders, effective communicators and develop generosity through citizenship and community service projects.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) makes operating loans of up to $5,000 to eligible individual youths ages 10 to 20 to finance income-producing, agriculture-related projects.  The project must be of modest size, educational, and initiated, developed and carried out by youths participating in 4-H Clubs, FFA, or a similar organization.

MaxYield Cooperative presented Clay County Extension and Outreach with a contribution aimed at decreasing the cost of enrollment in 4-H youth programs.

Clay County Extension will be offering testing this year for canner pressure gauges.  Clients can drop off their lids Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm.  The lids can be picked up on the next business day.  There is no fee and clients do not need to call ahead.

The 2013 Clay County 4-H Clover Bowl was held on February 10th, 2014 at the Hap Ketelsen Community Center in Everly.  Over 300 awards were handed out to 4-H members and club leaders.

Clay County 4-H Youth Development Program has citizenship as one of its priority topics. The Clay county 4-H clubs take this very seriously as every year interested clubs submit an essay declaring a charity or project they would like to raise money to support.

For the fourthyear, Spencer Municipal Utilities has partnered with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and 4-H to bring filmmaking to students.  This fun and educational week-long series was taught by Eric Meeter from SMU and was offered to area youth in grades 4-12.

ISU Extension and Outreach - Clay County hosted two week-long Robotics SpIn Events, Gear Tech I and also Gear Tech II.  These two camps focused on robotics, GPS and GIS for area youth in grades 4-9.

The top Junior Division and top Intermediate/Senior Division Clay County 4-Hers were awarded for their consumer judging ability and will advance to the District Competition held during the Clay County Fair.

Have you signed up for the K-3 Stuffed Animal Show at the Clay County Fair on Tuesday September 10th at 5:30pm?

This exciting event is open to all CC-E, Spencer and Sioux Central students in grades K-3.  Youth do not need to be in 4-H to participate.

Join 4-H on Thursday, July 18th  in the Courthouse Square during Spencer’s Mainstreet Market.  The Clay County Cattlemen will be grilling their famous burgers and 4-H will be serving them with chips, drink and a cookie to raise money for the Clay County 4-H Endowment fund.
