Fruit and Vegetable Field Day to Provide Information for Produce Growers

AMES, Iowa — Topics for fruit and vegetable farmers will be covered at the 2014 Fruit and Vegetable Field Day at the Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station on Monday, Aug. 11.
 
"The field day is geared toward commercial production but the event will be helpful to small-scale growers, master gardeners and homeowners who are interested in enhancing their production skills and diversifying their gardens and acreages,” said Ajay Nair, ISU Extension and Outreach vegetable specialist.
 
The field day will showcase fruit and vegetable production systems, cropping practices, research projects, and tools and equipment needed for horticultural crop production. Participants are asked to arrive at 2 p.m.
 
Dr. Jeff Isles, Iowa State University Horticulture Department chair, will begin the field day with a program beginning at 2:15 p.m. and ending at 5:15 p.m. The schedule will cover a variety of topics, including:
  • Organic broccoli and pepper production
  • Cover-cropping in potato production
  • Sweet potato plastic mulch trial
  • Importance of bees in fruit and vegetable production, with a visit to the Bee Research Facility
  • High tunnel production of tomatoes, cucumbers and raspberries
  • Peach cultivar trials
  • Tools and implements used in horticultural crop production
Supper and networking for participants will follow, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The field day is presented by Iowa State University, Practical Farmers of Iowa, Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.
