Nailing together a bluebird house, stitching up a potholder, pounding flowers into decorated cards, and making an archery bulls eye were a few of the new experiences students from across the county enjoyed recently at the annual Super Saturday event sponsored by the Chickasaw County 4-H program/ISU Extension.  Other fun activities included creating “stained glass” art, learning self-defense techniques and mastering Laser Shot, a virtual hunting and skeet shooting game. During the lunch hour, the students were treated to a pizza party and some dodgeball.

The county was well represented with about 60 fourth through eighth graders from New Hampton, St. Joseph, Sumner-Fredericksburg, Nashua-Plainfield and Turkey Valley schools.  Thank you to Chickasaw County 4-H County Council members that helped: Jaclyn Busta, Michelle Tiemessen, David Haeflinger, Abe Karels and Shawn Crooks.

The day would not be possible without the volunteered time of adults in the community sharing their talents and leading the sessions.  Thank you to New Hampton Police Officer Jeff Jackson and assistant Jayne Zwanziger, self-defense; Tom Brown, Nathan Brown, and Fred Hall, archery; Mike Booth, Bill Prouty and Robert Tigner, bluebird house; Bob Hauer and Diane Day, flower pounding; Crystal Griffin, “stained glass;” Chickasaw County Park Ranger Dave Sedivec, Laser Shot; and  4-H County Council Advisor Joyce Mueterthies, inside-out potholder. Also, thank you to Cenex, Godfather’s Pizza, Renegade and Bowlaway Lanes for providing door prizes to end the day.
