Fuel, fabric, paint and medicine were a few everyday items made from corn that surprised students who recently completed the Clover Kids “Gifts of Gold” after-school programs in the county.  The 28 kindergarten through third graders enjoyed learning about one of the most important crops in Iowa and in the world – corn!  They learned about the plant and its origin, sculpted with biodegradable packing peanuts, made cornhusk dolls and ate snacks with corn as an ingredient.  “Gifts of Gold” was sponsored by the Chickasaw County Extension Office.

The next programs, “Where Do They Go?” are set for late October to mid-November at each of the elementary schools.  Lessons and fun will center on animal migration, hibernation and adaption.  The December program will be “Holiday Crafts” where each student is able to make 4 projects to give as gifts.  Please keep in mind these programs often fill up quickly on a first come basis and may be limited depending upon the availability of volunteer help.
