June 29, 2015

Tickets are still available for the 2015 Family BBQ at the Chickasaw County 4-H & FFA Fair in Nashua! This year the Cattlemen will be serving burgers, baked beans, potato salad and lemonade. Farm Credit Services of America will once again be donating the ice cream for dessert! Tickets are $6.50 each and can be picked up at the Chickasaw County Extension Office (104 E Main St, New Hampton) and a limited number of tickets will be avilable at the door. 

*Be sure to stay for the Fair Queen Crowning after the BBQ!

Over the past several years, NICC and the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation have installed a variety of conservation practices including bioswale, conservation plantings, shelterbelts, native trees, butterfly garden, storm water wetlands, grassed waterways, sediment basin, cover crops, infiltration trench, enhanced rain garden, permeable pavers and sediment basin. View these practices in person at a Conservation Tour on July 22.

It is often assumed that starting a food hub is a capital intensive process requiring large investments in infrastructure, transportation, logistics and personnel at the outset. A new publication produced by the Leopold Center, ISU Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Food Hub, describes how emerging food hubs can grow successfully under money constraints if cash flow is managed strategically.

Livestock producers with an interest in beginning or transitioning grazing practices can sharpen their skills by attending Greenhorn Grazing workshops offered by Iowa State University Extension. The Greenhorn Grazing short course consists of five different modules taught over the grazing season.
