March is the month that most gardeners come out of hibernation. Pruning, raking, tilling and clean-up will start in earnest. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach can help you ease into the bustle and have some fun by coming to the 9th Annual Horticulture Chautauqua in New Hampton. The Chautauqua was popular 100 years ago when people attended lectures for current information. Today, everything is on the internet, but it is still hard to beat a real person who can answer your questions! The Northeast Iowa Horticulture Chautauqua will be held on Saturday, March 3 from 9 am to 3 pm at the New Hampton Middle School. Twelve presentations will be offered covering a wide variety of topics. Participants will choose four sessions to attend that day.

Private Pesticide Recertification Course to be Offered March 13th

Chickasaw County will offer the Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification Course for pesticide applicators on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. The course will be held at City Hall in New Hampton.

Annual Forest Stewardship Conference Is March 10

The 2012 Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference is Saturday, March 10 at Sinsinawa Mound Center, Sinsinawa, Wis. This is the 18th year for the conference, which annually draws 550 woodland landowners from Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Morel Mushroom Certification Workshops Scheduled for March and April

Individuals who would like to be able to sell morel mushrooms legally within the state of Iowa can take a three-hour certification workshop in March or April. Workshops are being offered at several locations across the state.

Elwynn Taylor to Speak at ISU Northern Research Farm Annual Meeting

The Iowa State University Northern Research and Demonstration Farm will hold its association annual meeting and an educational program on March 8 at the Duncan Hall in Duncan Iowa. The program will begin at 9 a.m. and adjourn at 2 p.m.; lunch will be provided.
Connect to Nature at February Virtual Eco Family Conference

The 2012 Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference is Saturday, March 10 at Sinsinawa Mound Center, Sinsinawa, Wis. One of the largest private woodland owner conferences in the nation, it  will cover a wide range of forestry and wildlife topics including timber marketing in today’s economy.

Iowa Learning Farms is again hosting a series of webinars on the third Wednesday of each month in 2012. The next webinar is Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 11:30 a.m., and will feature Jacqueline Comito, an anthropologist with the Sociology Department at Iowa State University.

Second Farmland Drainage Workshop to Be Held Jan. 30

An ISU Extension and Outreach workshop will examine various aspects of farmland drainage on Jan. 30 at Big Ed’s Firehouse in New Hampton. The program that begins 9 a.m. and adjourns at 3:30 p.m. has been scheduled due to an overwhelming interest in a December workshop.
Virtual Eco Family Conference Connects Families to the Environment

Iowa families throughout the state will be getting together — virtually — once a month from January through June for an Eco Family Conference from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. It’s an opportunity for families to improve the environment, reduce their carbon footprint and create community close to home.
