Clover Kids

Cerro Gordo County Extension is excited to offer Clover Kids Summer Camp! Clover Kids is perfect for kids who live in the city, in a rural area, or on a farm. Clover Kids will meet once a week for five weeks. Each week, the two hour program will explore a different "theme" with literature, activities, and crafts. AMES, Iowa — The Integrated Pest Management program at Iowa State University is hosting its fourth crop scouting competition on Aug. 5 for teams of Iowa high school students. Organizers announced the 2014 theme, Crop Scouting Innovations, this week along with extending an invitation to participate to teams of high school students (those completing grades 9-12).

Mason City Community Gardens - 2014 Launch, Wednesday, May 7, 6-8 pm, Garden Acres, 900 block of S. Kentucky (rain site Trinity Lutheran Church). Public welcome. Come learn about your own garden and sign up for a garden plot. Mason City Community Garden-Garden Acres. Rent a plot and grow a garden! Garden Acres is located in the 900 block of South Kentucky Avenue by the water tower. Plot fees are required before the plot can be assigned. The fee will cover water and rough tillage costs. 4-H Teen Council

Cerro Gordo County 4-H Teen Council found out that serving the community can be a fun experience in itself. The 4-H Teen Council spent Wednesday evening purchasing Toys for Tots at Mills Fleet Farm in Mason City.

"In response to freezing temperatures, the oxalic acid in the leaves will translocate (move) to the rhubarb stalk. Once frozen, the leaf tissue will initially appear 'water soaked' and then wilt, and eventually blacken along the edges or where tissue was damaged. Once the plant experiences a damaging freeze, the stalks should not be eaten, and should be removed from the plant.
