Focus groups can be used to provide information on participants' opinions, attitudes and perceptions. A focus group is usually composed of six to ten individuals who have been chosen to participate based on their personal characteristics. Open-ended questions are used to elicit information, and group discussion and participation is encouraged. Focus groups produce qualitative data, as opposed to the quantitative data usually seen as the result of a questionnaire survey.
Ten Steps in the Focus Group Process
- Goals are determined and questions are formulated.
- Method for choosing participants is determined.
- Memorandum of agreement is formalized.
- Logistical arrangements (meeting room, equipment) are made by the group requesting services.
- Session is conducted and tape recorded.
- Note-taker operates the tape recorder and observes participant behavior.
- Taped proceedings are transcribed.
- Transcriptions are analyzed.
- Final report is prepared.
- Results are used for planning questionnaire development, or to provide further interpretation of survey findings.
