Each age division is assigned a category:
- Discovering (3-4 grade) - Fruit or Vegetable Appetizer
- Juniors (5-6 grade) - Family Favorite Casseroles
- Intermediates (7-8 grade) - Whole Grains
- Seniors (9-12 grade) - Ethnic Foods
You can prepare any type of dish (snack, appetizer, main dish, salad, dessert, etc.) that falls in the appropriate category. Since this contest is called the 'Best of Iowa' we want you to select a recipe that uses Iowa products.
You will only have 20 minutes in front of the judge to prepare your dish. (This does not include cooking time).
When your food is done, you will serve the judge the finished product. After you have been judged, your food goes to a tasting table for the audience to sample your recipe. And you can sample what other 4-H'ers have prepared.
Clothing Selection/Fashion Revue
Do you have an outfit picked for that special occasion? Do you like to construct clothing garments? Share your buymonship skills or construction skills by participating in Clothing Selection of Fashion Revue.
- Clothing Selection - You purchase an outfit, either new or used. You do not have to be enrolled in clothing to participate. You will model your outfit for the judge and talk about the reason you selected it, how you will take care of your outfit and the cost. Outfits may be purchased for a special occasion or for casual wear.
- Fashion Revue - You make your outfit and do need to be enrolled in clothing to participate in this. You will model the outfit you have made in front of the judge and will be evaluated on your grooming, how your outfit looks on you, and sewing as it affects the appearance.
The judging for these contests will be held on July 18 at the Heritage House in Atlantic. You will also get to model your outfit at the Style Show at County Fair.
Decorator's Showcase
How would you like to get rid of everything in your home and start over to decorate with no limitations? Decorator's Showcase gives you an opportunity to do just that as you show us how you would decorate a room.
You get to select coordinating textures and colors and put them into a display. Local businesses have donated supplies like wallpaper, paint chips, carpeting, upholstery fabrics, and drapery samples. You will be given one hour to sort through these samples as you decorate your own room.
- Juniors/Discovery get to decorate a bedroom.
- Intermediates may select any room.
- Seniors will be given a special decorating challenge which includes designing a floor plan.
The best part of this contest is that everything is done at the county fair!

Participating in the Extemporaneous Speaking contest is a wonderful opportunity to enhance your communication skills, as you will use them throughout your life. Two participants can

Working Exhibits
A Working Exhibit is a showing and telling of how to do something. The 4-H'er is present to communicate a process, fact or idea to an audience. The audience is normally standing, having stopped as they were passing by. The audience may be few in number and can ask questions at any time. The exhibit needs attractions such as posters, pictures, equipment samples and action to interest people in stopping to look and listen. Questions like "Have you seen...?" or "Would you like to know how to...?" might help to get started. Many stages of the exhibit or product should be ready so that any step can be discussed. It is an information explanation/discussion between you and the audience.
The purpose might be to:
- Introduce ... something new or different
- Motivate ... get people interested
- Inform ... give facts, thoughts, so people have knowledge
- Explain ... the how and why so people understand
- Get Action ... people will do what you teach them.
Giving a working exhibit makes you the "teacher". Your topic is presented more informally, with no prepared speech.
Educational Presentations
All 4-H'ers have the responsibility to give an Educational Presentation to their 4-H club during the year. Now 4-H'ers can polish up that presentation and give it at the Cass County Fair.
Remember, a presentation has 3 parts:
Introduction
Body
Conclusion
Poster Contest
4-H'ers may participate in communications by exhibiting a poster relating to one of the following themes:
1. "License to Succeed"
2. "4-H is...."
3. "Sounds Like Fun"
4. "Join 4-H"
Show what the theme means to you using paint, crayon, charcoal, or any other materials. Posters must be 14" x 22" in dimension. There is no pre-entry for this contest. Bring it to be judged on Saturday with the rest of your fair exhibits.
