Carroll County Hosts: Linking Food and Literacy: Read, Eat, and Learn

baby

“Linking Literacy with Food: Read, Eat, and Learn” uses books to teach children about nutrition and make healthy choices.

Good nutrition is essential for physical and emotional growth so it is important to start good habits at an early age.  A poorly nourished child may be restless, irritable, or more withdrawn than a well-nourished child.

Did you know Iowa children are falling behind on reading?  By the end of third grade many Iowa children can’t read very well.  This is important because until third grade children are learning to read.  Starting in fourth grade children are reading to learn.  This means if they are not reading at grade level by fourth grade, children will start having trouble with other subjects like math, science, history, music and English.  It is important to give children an early start on some literacy skills.  With this early start children will find learning much easier and more enjoyable.  They will know more words and have larger vocabularies.  We all need to work together to help children read.

Join us Tuesday, April 16, 2013, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. to discuss new ways to connect with children as we explore literacy strategies to use with great books.
