Crop Advantage Series Provides Latest Crop Production Information

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will hold a Crop Advantage Series meeting in Storm Lake on January 15, 2014.  The location will be the Siebens Forum at Buena Vista University. 
Registration begins at 9:30.  The program will be conducted from 10:00 to 3:30.  Paul Kassel, Extension Field Agronomist, is hosting this Crop Advantage Series meeting.  There are thirteen Crop Advantage Series meetings that will be held by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Iowa from Jan. 6-30, 2014. 
Elwynn Taylor, ISU Extension climatologist, will be one of the morning keynote speakers.  Taylor will discuss the Crop weather outlook for 2014. 
Bob Hartzler, ISU Extension weed management specialist, will also be featured during the morning program.  He will discuss some of the issues with glyphosate resistant waterhemp, his work with Palmer waterhemp and long term strategies for effective weed control in corn and soybean.  
The remainder of this program will feature workshop sessions in the afternoon.  Topics will include a grain market outlook by Chad Hart, Nutrient Reduction Strategy discussion by Matt Helmers and corn rootworm update information by Erin Hodgson.  Other topics include a discussion on Corn Suitability Rating 2 and discussion on updated fertilizer recommendations.  Workshop sessions will also include cover crops and key ratios for effective farm financial management.
Advance registration for each location is $35 and includes workshop materials, lunch and refreshments. Registration by January 8 or at the door is $45. Certified Crop advisors can obtain up to five CEU credits for an additional fee of $25.00.
Private pesticide applicators will be able to obtain their continuing instructional course credits at this meeting.  An additional fee of $20.00 applies.  The program will adjourn at 4:15 for persons attending this pesticide course.
