Multi-County 4-H Crop Scout members and youth grades 8th through 12th will get to explore this high-tech Agriculture on Monday, February 18, 2008 from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM by experiencing Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology and driving a ‘hands-free’ tractor.  This experience is part of the ISU Extension 4-H Global Positioning System and Precision Agriculture Workshop for youth in Buena Vista, Cherokee, Ida and Sac Counties to be at the Storm Lake AEA Meeting Room.  A Friday, February 15, 2008 deadline exists for 4-H’ers and 8-12th grade youth to register for limited spaces available.

Youth who are interested in being a part of the February 18th GPS/Precision Agriculture technology experience will use hand-held GPS receivers, experience ‘touch screen display’ and see AutoTrac hands-free tractor operations.  The special workshop is presented by Storm Lake Hultgren John Deere’s Technology AMS Consultant Manager, Holly Sandhoff.

According to Northwest Iowa 4-H Youth Field Specialist, Carol Ehlers, 4-H’ers and the registered 8-12th grade youth will use GPS technology to secure their own data point.  The technology savvy youth will then experience the use of this technology for Agriculture.

Ehlers says, "A GPS Precision Agriculture program provides youth and families with the science behind the technology. Our goal using GPS in learning is to increase youth’s ability to see the application of this technology for agriculture and in decision making."

Organizers of the 4-H Crop Scout Team include Citizens First National Bank Farm Manager, Mike Sandhoff;  ISU Extension Crops Specialists Mark Licht and Paul Kassel; Sac County Farm Bureau officer, Jeff Degner; and  Monsanto’s Technology Development Manager, Craig Lamoureux.

The Multi-county 4-H Crop Scout project is supported with the help of Iowa State University's Extension Science, Engineering and Technology (E-SET) program, which makes GPS hand-helds available to ISU Extension county offices.  E-SET, a 4-H Youth Development program, specializes in science and technology education for youth.
