A total of 152 4-H youth from 55 counties completed written applications and face-to-face interviews for the state-level 4-H award opportunity this year. The awards are given to youth who have exhibited mastery, leadership, communication and service in a specific project area.

Degree days are a useful tool to estimate when common stalk borer larvae begin moving into cornfields. Start scouting corn for larvae when 1,300-1,400 degree days (base 41°F) have accumulated.

Fairs, livestock auctions, swap meet and exotic sales will not include birds. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship today announced an order to cancel all live bird exhibitions at county fairs, the Iowa State Fair and other gatherings of birds due to avian influenza.

A few things to note regarding the 2015 survey

  • The statewide average for corn/soybeans was down 5%, from $260 to $246/acre.
  • Rental data is not collected for individual farms.The number of responses is the number of individuals who provided information about typical rents across the county.
  • Information on CSR2 can be found on the Soils website.

Average Iowa farmland value is now estimated to be $7,943 per acre—a drop in value of $773, or 8.9 percent, per acre. Land values were determined by the Iowa Land Value Survey, which was conducted in November by the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development a t Iowa State University.

Job growth in the retail and service sector has not matched the wages of manufacturing and other middle-skill level jobs lost over the past decade in Iowa. The difference has contributed to a growing disparity between low and high income households, which is especially profound in specific parts of the state, according to a new report by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach rural sociologist David Peters.

The Buena Vista County 4-H Fund and Endowment Board has approved funds for use by youth who need financial assistance to participate in the Iowa Youth and 4-H program.  These funds are intended to provide an opportunity for youth who otherwise would be financially unable to participate in events, activities and individual or group projects at the county, area or state level.
