Opportunities for Members

JBS Pork University

Youth 16 and older with a valid driver’s license are encourage to participate in JBS Pork University.  May 5 starting at 8:30am youth interested in STEM, Swine, Ag Business, and Production Management are encouraged to pick up a REGISTRATION FORM, due April 22, at the Marshall County Extension Office.  The ISU Extension Office is located at 2608 South 2nd St, Marshalltown IA 50158 or download from
This NEW and one of a kind opportunity for youth is not to be missed.  Tour the Nation’s best hog processing plant, *JBS Swift and Co. in Marshalltown, IA.  The plant was awarded the Processor of the Year by the National Provisioner in 2013.  Finally, tour the ISU Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition sensory lab, and taste test various qualities of meat while exploring meat quality.  Any youth ages 16 and above with a valid driver’s license is encouraged to register!  The program is offered for FREE in partnership with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, JBS Swift and Co Marshalltown, Iowa Pork Producers, Iowa State University, and Marshall County Farm Bureau. 
*Please, be advised, participants will experience a full tour of JBS including harvesting the hog.

Ujima Retreat and Maize Retreat

Registration is now open for the Culturally-Based Youth Leadership Accelerators (CYLA): Ujima Retreat and Maize Retreat!
On April 15-17 we shall have the Ujima retreat that explores Higher Education, Healthy Living, STEM, Citizenship & Leadership, and Communication and the arts through the narrative of African Americans and new African refugees & immigrants.  The following Maize retreat, will explore the same topics through a Latino and Native American narrative on April 22-24.

4-H Center Spring Cleanup Day

The 4-H Center is preparing for the 2016 summer camping season and needs help with several projects to be ready in time for summer!  These projects will take numerous hands—both big and small—so youth and adults are encouraged!  Come as an individual, family, 4-H club or volunteer group for an awesome time in the great outdoors.  Lunch provided by 4-H Foundation. Scholarships Available

Winner's Circle Scholarships (Freshman/May1; Undergraduate/April1)
College-bound Iowa youth active in 4-H and/or FFA livestock and agricultural projects and current undergraduate students may apply for scholarships available from the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA).
The scholarships are available to freshmen entering any Iowa two or four-year, post-secondary institution this fall and current undergraduates attending Iowa State University. Applicants must major in animal science or a curriculum in agriculture or human sciences that is related to the agriculture industry.
Winners will be announced during the 2016 Iowa State Fair annual 4-H/FFA Sale of Champions on Saturday, August 20th, an event sponsored by IFAA. Winner's Circle scholarship funds come from a percentage of Sale of Champions proceeds as well as Winner’s Circle Club donations. Marion County Beef Fitting/Showmanship Clinic

The Marion County Beef Superintendents are proud to present a beef fitting & showing clinic by Kirk Stierwalt.  Clinics will be held April 15-17.  You will have the opportunity to bring your own cattle in, and work one-on-one with Kirk as he works on clipping, fitting, showmanship, feeding, and the basics of managing your show cattle. There will be prizes, drawings, and a free event t-shirt. Registration is due by March 1st.  More information is available at
