On June 9th, we will be hosting Session #3 of the Beginning Gardening 101 series.  In this session we will be taking a home tour of a local Master Gardener’s home vegetable gardens, annual and perennial gardens, and their three-acre property with a multitude of plants.  Sessions #3 and #4 together cost $12 per family.  The date for session #4 is to be announced, but will focus on harvesting of vegetables and fall chores for the home gardener.  For more information please call me at the Extension Office at 319-334-7161.

The Buchanan County Master Gardeners and 4-H are working together on a community betterment project to promote healthy eating in the youth of Buchanan County.  The Youth Voice: Youth Choice grant is focusing on growing organic fruits and vegetables, then offering them as healthy snack alternatives at the fair.  The goal of the project is to show how even in a small space a person can have a garden and how delicious home-grown vegetables and fruit taste.  The cost of seeds is also very low considering the yield that a plant can produce.  Both the Master Gardeners and the 4-H youth are looking forward to sharing the snacks on Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21, in the 4-H building at the Buchanan County Fair.

The Buchanan County Extension Office is also hosting a Summer Webinar Series entitled: Gardening Goodness.  The first session was on Delectable Vegetables and was held in the Heartland Acres Events Center on May 22nd.  The next session will be “Food and Gardening and Health; and Glenwood’s Giving Garden”, which will be held at Heartland Acres Theater, June 26th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  The cost to attend the sessions is $5 for Master Gardeners who wear their badge, and $7 for the general public.  Fees are used to offset the cost of the programs.

With all of these opportunities for gardening programs I hope to see community members participate in at least one of these programs and get the gardening groove out there!

     Happy gardening!
