Buchanan County Master Gardener’s held their holiday party at St. James Episcopal Church in Independence recently.  Social time was followed by a dinner and entertainment was provided by Vernie Kirkendall.

The 4-H/FFA Market Beef weigh-in date for Buchanan County is set for Saturday morning, December 13, 2014. Youth are to bring their market beef animals to the Winthrop Veterinary Clinic, from 8 -10 am. All beef market animals MUST come to the weigh-in to be eligible for the 2015 Buchanan County Fair.

Iowa dairy producers have the opportunity to learn about emerging dairy industry issues at the 2015 ISU Extension Dairy Days hosted by Iowa State University Extension specialists. The program is scheduled at seven eastern Iowa locations between Jan. 20 and Feb. 6. Bremer County will host an event on Monday, Jan. 19th.

And if you need to file for bankruptcy it can feel like you are bombarded with information you really don’t know what to do with. There are also companies out there that you may be referred to that you are not quite sure about. That is where we come in.

Dates in Buchanan County for training are Thursday, Jan. 29th, 1:30-3:30 p.m, and Thursday, Feb. 26th, 7-9 p.m., both at Heartland Acres Events Center.  Testing will be held Wednesday, March 11, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Falcon Civic Center in Independence.

They discover a number of cans that are several years old and wonder if it is still safe to use those cans.

Callers to the AnswerLine often ask if it is possible to freeze eggs, according to Liz Meimann, Extension Program Specialist II—Families.  Yes, you can easily freeze eggs for later baking or scrambling. You have the choice to either freeze whole eggs or separate the eggs and freeze yolks and whites by themselves.

“Don’t talk to me that way.” “Quit slamming the door.” Isn’t it amazing how the first words that often come out of a parent’s mouth is a description of what our kids are doing wrong. Then we threaten and soon we’re in the  middle of an argument. Taken too far, we may resort to harsh punishment like a slap to the face or a spanking. Later when we cool down, we may   realize that nothing was learned and the same problem is apt to happen again and again.
