The Iowa Gypsy Moth Management Team will be conducting public meetings in northeastern Iowa in mid-April to discuss gypsy moth management actions for summer 2013. The meetings are free and open to the public.

The drought of 2012 has likely increased the carryover of nitrate-nitrogen (nitrate-N) into the 2013 season. In addition to less N being used by last year’s crop, the reduced rainfall in 2012 resulted in less nitrate leaving the soil through leaching and de-nitrification.

One thing that we learned from the 1988 drought was that it resulted in less nitrogen needed for many corn fields in1989, according to Jim Fawcett, ISU Extension Field Agronomist.

Attached is my most recent dairy outlook. We will have a difficult time with dairy supply next month if the USDA continues its sequester dance. They have suspended the Milk Production report. At least till the US Congress gives them more money or flexibility.
