Integrated Pest Management Saves Farmers Money

Integrated Pest Mgmt Impact

“My personal experiences with the ISU Extension indicate that this branch of the University returns far more value in benefits than it costs me as a taxpayer.  The relatively few pennies out of my tax dollar that went to fund the Extension Service have been returned many times over through just the Integrated Pest Management Program.  Recommendations from Brian Lang of the Extension Service on spraying soybeans to kill aphids last year saved me at least $30,000 worth of crop.  That is more than a hundred fold increase on the share of my family’s property taxes that went to support Extension.”

Mark Mueller, Waverly, IA

For years extension educators have promoted various Integrated Crop Management (ICM) techniques. Integrated Crop Management is a sustainable approach to managing crop production, using a combination of biological, cultural, and chemical tactics that reduces pests to tolerable levels that minimize economic, health, and environmental risks.
